Alabama Senator Doug Jones helped to prosecute two of the bombers of the Birmingham 16th Street Church in 1963. While it took nearly 40 years, his team was able to bring justice for the 4 girls kilos that day. This book is part personal memoir and part legal history. It shows that homegrown terrorism is not new in this country, but also that good people can defeat evil. Great book!

I think this book could've been alot better. Jones is too self-serving for me.. this is almost more of a memoir than a history book. And contrary to the back cover, the book is NOT destined to become a classic of civil rights history. The 1963 bombing of the 18th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama is something all of us should study, reflect on and learn from. There are plenty of other good books on it though than this one.The author spends too much time talking about his own political journey and not enough on the history of the actual bombing. An easy read, but could've been a whole lot better.

I think that this book is in effect two books.....or rather, portions of it are framed for and aimed at different constituencies. The memoir portion/aspects of the book will probably appeal to more people than the more historical, just-the-facts-m’am portion will. The more historically focused portions are dry, and the writing isn’t great. But those are the portions that interested me. I read a fair amount of history, and I prefer drier historical writing to more florid writing. I was a lot less interested in Jones’s reflections and observations. It didn’t help that —at least by my lights—the memoir portions were self-serving, and somewhat shallow. The book is a quick read. Since I think it is incumbent on everyone to know something about seminal civil rights era events, I recommend the book.

It seems every politician has to have a book to convince folks you should vote for them. Doug Jones has written one of the best of the genre, because his is a true story of prosecuting the people (using the term loosely) who blew up the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham and killed 4 little girls. It was not an easy case. Time had passed. Witnesses were reluctant, even hostile. Even good prosecutors had kicked the can down the street because the likelihood of winning was slim. Doug Jones took the risk of losing and put murders in jail and got justice for the families. If a politician needs a calling card, this is the best one he could have IMHO. Unfortunately still, too many people disagree

Bending to Justice is the story of the lengthy prosecution of the perpetrators of the Birmingham Church Bombing which killed four African American girls at the height of the Civil Rights movement and served to illustrate the divisions and perhaps eventually the hope for a better southern society. In its own way, it’s more like a history of how Alabama as a symbol of southern society has bent perhaps slower than we would hope from a society that hid killers to one that would do the right thing. This book is part history and part memoir written by Doug Jones who was the federal prosecutor who put two of the bombers behind bars in the early 2000s. The first few sections that lay out the events, previous trials, and Jones memories of these events is rather flat and dry. There’s a detachment that is a little off-putting, but once we get into Jones prosecution in the 1990s and 2000s, the book springs to life and it reads like a larger scale Law and Order mixed with Ghosts of Mississippi. He concludes by discussing the current political climate, where appeals on racial and ethnic grounds are becoming at least somewhat normalized once again.A solid read, if one can maintain interest through the first few chapters.

The story is a compelling one: the 1963 murder, by bombing, of four little African-American girls in their Birmingham church. This is Doug Jones' personal account of his prosecution, in 2001 and 2002 as U.S. Attorney in Alabama, of the last two defendants. This book centers on the crime, the tumultuous period of civil rights conflict in those early years, and, further on, the long-delayed investigation and trial. This book is an "as told to" account, understandably, since Doug Jones is, as of late 2017, a newly-elected US Senator. Nonetheless, the narrative is readable, and seems personal, in his voice if not entirely his prose. It's not a political biography, either, though he does mention his election in the final chapters as something of an epilogue. The book is mainly about an important part of the civil rights struggle, about a dreadful terrorist crime, and about the long effort to bring about justice. The investigation and courtroom battle are central to the book and are gripping reading. Highly recommend.

This is a great book that is powerful. Great information on civil rights, from the perspective of a firsthand account. Compelling reading. Vital study given current climate in US.

This 2018 book by Alabama’s Democratic Senator Doug Jones is his personalized account of the horrific 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham in which four (4) young African American girls died. Jones, the lead prosecutor of two of three bombers, presents in vivid detail a highly informed “on the ground” history of the background of these young victims, their evil killers (Klu Klux Klan members), the racial culture of Birmingham, and the investigators’ tireless unearthing of “admissible” evidence in their long struggle to impose justice on the last two bombers. Jones has no pretense of objectivity; his recounting is accusatory and harsh as it should be; capturing the atmospherics of the American South in all its colorful patois. Overtly personal, at times excessive, the book turns political in the end which is unnecessary as the real tale as told by him is intriguing, exploratory and satisfying in all its heart wrenching detail. This book provides a fitting background to Dawoud Bey’s splendid photo exhibit at the National Gallery of Art called “The Birmingham Project.”
